Abstract:The cationic surfactants of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) bearing ester units have excellent surface activity, biodegradability, flexibility and antibacterial properties in comparison with common QAS. In recent years, ester based quaternary ammonium salts attract much attention due to their green environmental friendly properties. In this review, the progress of multi-functional ester quaternary ammonium salts (EQAS) was summarized with three parts: 1) the synthesis and properties of traditional multi-functional EQAS; 2) antibacterial mechanism and activity of various EQAS such as mono-QAS, gemini-QAS and polymeric QAS; 3) the properties and advantages of multi-functional EQAS with controllable release flavor. In summary, EQAS surfactants have diverse functionality due to their structural flexibility, which could be broadly applied in the formulations of daily chemicals.
