Abstract:Molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) directly affect the processing properties and mechanical properties of UHMWPE. However, traditional gel chromatography (GPC) has certain limitations, and the viscosity average molecular weight is difficult to fully reflect the structural characteristics of UHMWPE. In order to develop a method with high precision and good repeatability for measuring molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of UHMWPE, a gel column with suitable gel pore size was selected to overcome the problem of wider molecular weight distribution using common GPC with the solution flow classification mechanism in mind, based on the existing GPC equipment. Through the systematically study of the UHMWPE/trichlorobenzene dissolution method, the problem of poor repeatability of ordinary GPC results was also solved. Improvements mentioned above have important practical significance for the development and later processing of new UHMWPE products.
