Abstract Bi2O3/ZnFe2O4/RGO photocatalyst loaded with bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) was synthesized through a solvothermal method using reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a substrate, in order to improve the photocatalytic performance of spinel zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) for degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). The microstructure of photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis), and then applied to photocatalytic degradation of CIP. The experimental results showed that when the molar ratio of Bi2O3 to ZnFe2O4 was 20% and the content of RGO was 10% (mass fraction), the Bi2O3/ZnFe2O4/RGO offered CIP photodegradation efficiency of 92.4% under visible light irradiation. The quasi-first-order constant of Bi2O3/ZnFe2O4/RGO was 3.36 times that of ZnFe2O4. Moreover, the CIP degradation rate of Bi2O3/ZnFe2O4/RGO still maintained at 86.2% after five cycles experiments. The improved photodegradation performance of Bi2O3/ZnFe2O4/RGO could be ascribed to the construction of heterostructure and the addition of RGO, which significantly increased the exposed active sites and enhanced the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby effectively promoting the photodegradation activity of CIP.
