Abstract The Ru nanoparticles embedded in carbon catalyst (Ru-SC) was successfully prepared by using wheat flour as the carbon source, ruthenium trichloride as the metal precursor with in-situ carbon thermal reduction method. Through CO chemisorption and TEM characterization, it was proved that ruthenium nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed, partly embedded on the pore wall of the carbon support. The Ru-SC catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance in the aqueous hydrogenation of benzoic acid. The conversion rate and selectivity of catalyst Ru-SC was significantly higher than that of Ru/AC catalyst, and the Turnover frequency (TOF) reached 524 h-1 at 120 ℃ and hydrogen pressure of 4 MPa. Moreover, it had good stability, and the conversion rate did not decrease obviously after applying the experiment for 5 times. This method used abundant biological wheat flour as carbon precursor, with simple preparation process and low cost. It was expected to be widely used in the preparation of supported metal catalysts.
