Electrochemical Behavior of Graphite Felt Electrodes in the Indirect Electrochemical Synthesis Reaction with Ce3+/Ce4+ as the Medium

Abstract The electrochemical behavior of graphite felt electrodes in the indirect electrochemical synthesis reaction with Ce3+/Ce4+ as the medium was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, constant current electrolysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy spectroscopy techniques. The results showed that the oxidation response current density of graphite felt electrodes to cerium sulfate (Ⅲ) was much higher than that of graphite and lead electrodes, and the current density increased with the increase of the thickness of graphite felt. The constant current electrolysis experiments showed that under the conditions of 27 ℃, high current density of 100 mA/cm², and sulfuric acid concentration of 1.0 mol/L, the current efficiency could reach more than 95%. It was concluded by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy spectrometer that after 30 times of electrolysis at 27 ℃, the surface morphology of graphite felt electrodes remained stable and unchanged, and there were only carbon elements and a small amount of sulfur elements on the electrode surface. Graphite felt electrodes can greatly improve the space-time yield of indirect electrochemical synthesis reaction in industrial production, achieve the effect of reducing energy consumption, and have an extremely high service life.
