Effects of Belt Connection on the Uneven Flow Structures in the Loop Polypropylene Reactor

Abstract In order to investigate effects of uneven flow structure on the stable operation in the loop reactor for polypropylene, the loop reactor with belt connection was simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in this work and further compared with the one without belt connection to reveal effects of belt connection on the uneven flow structures. Results showed that the effect of belt connection on the flow structure in the inlet pipe of the reactor was bigger than that in the outlet pipe. The non-uniformity in the inlet pipe increased significantly by the belt connection, while in the outlet the non-uniformity just some fluctuations showed in limited regions near the belt connection. Further, the mechanism of belt connection was revealed to be the split-flow effect in the inlet and flow-collection effect in the outlet. Under these two effects, the uniform gas-solid flow in the inlet pipe was changed into the uneven two-phase flow with high solid concentration in the center and low solid concentration near the wall, and the original uneven gas-solid flow with high solid concentration in the center and low solid concentration near the wall was changed to another uneven gas-solid flow with opposite solid distribution in the outlet pipe. Results in this work will show guidance for the design and optimization of the polypropylene loop reactor.
