Numerical Simulation of Solid-Liquid Suspension Characteristics in Biodiesel Reactor

Abstract The reactor with dual stirring structure was selected to ensure the homogeneity of solid-liquid mixing in biodiesel reactor using solid acid catalyst. The double-layer agitators with different impeller combinations were combined by the upper impeller A200 and lower impeller A100 (A1), or the upper impeller A100 and lower impeller A200 (A2). Based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, the mixture multiphase flow model was used to simulate solid-liquid suspension characteristics of solid acid particles in the reactor. The just suspension impeller speeds of solid acid particles completely off the bottom in two reactors were predicted, and the effects of operating conditions on the velocity, concentration distribution and homogeneity of solid acid particles were investigated. The results indicated that the just suspension speed of the particles in the A1 reactor is smaller than that in the A2 reactor for the same particle size, and increasing the impeller speed and reducing the particle size were both beneficial to increase the velocity of the solid acid particles, and the influence of the volume fraction on the velocity of the solid acid particles was small. When impeller speed, particle diameter and volume fraction were 980 r/min, 0.3 mm and 0.75% respectively, the standard deviations of the concentration distribution of solid acid particles in the A1 reactor were decreased by 4.25%, 4.25% and 2.58% respectively, compared with that in A2 reactor, which means the A1 is superior to the A2 for the homogeneity of solid acid particles distribution in the reactor.
