Influence of the Axial Flow Pump’s Impeller Structure on the Flow Field Characteristics of the Pump

Abstract:To explore the influence of the impeller structure of the axial flow pump on its flow field characteristics in a polyethylene loop reactor, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was used to study the effects of the number of blades, blade installation angles, and impeller diameters on the head, efficiency and flow field characteristics of the pump when isobutane was used as the solvent. The results showed that the heads calculated by CFD simulation were in good agreement with those obtained from the experiments, and the simulation results were some accurate. As the number of blades increased, the head of the pump gradually increased and the efficiency decreased slightly, but the flow separation phenomenon gradually disappeared and the stability of the flow field gradually increased. As the blade installation angle increased, the head of the pump generally decreased and the efficiency generally increased, at the same time flow separation phenomenon become more obvious and the stability of the flow field gradually decreased. In addition, as the impeller diameter increased, both the head and efficiency of the pump gradually increased, and the turbulence of the path lines behind the impeller gradually weakened as well as the stability of the flow field gradually increased. The results could provide theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of the axial flow pump structure used in the polyethylene loop reactor.
