Research Progress of Coal to Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) Methanation Process Technology

Abstract:In view of the current situation of China's ‘rich coal, lean oil, and little gas” energy resources, China is vigorously pushing forward the development of coal-based natural gas. Syngas methanation technology is one of the core technologies of coal to synthetic natural gas (SNG). This development of domestic coal-based natural gas projects and the progress of methanation process technology were reviewed in this article. The adiabatic fixed bed and fluidized bed methanation process were mainly introduced. The flow, technical characteristics and application of different processes such as the adiabatic fixed bed process with circulation, isothermal tubular process, and slurry bed process were analyzed and compared. The author also put forwarded the prospect of the SNG methanation technology.
