Study on the Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by Surface Plasmon Modification of Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract A simple and efficient plasma etching method was applied on the surface modification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The modified catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the defect degree and oxygen content of CNTs were greatly improved. It was found that oxygen and nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotubes could effectively improve the activation performance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In the study of degradation performance of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), its reaction rate was 3.2 times that of the unmodified carbon nanotubes, and the removal rate of 2,4-DCP could reach 97% within 30 min. At the same time, it also showed good performance in actual water and amplification experiments. Quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance experiment showed that the main active substance in the system is singlet oxygen (1O2). This paper provided a simple preparation method of high performance metal-free PMS catalyst, and showed a good application prospect in the removal of organic pollutants in water.
