Impact of Different Synthesis Conditions on the Properties of BSA@ZIF-8 Composites

Abstract In this study, BSA@ZIF-8 composites were synthesized under different conditions using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as model protein. The morphology and structure of the composites were characterized and analyzed by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and laser particle size analyzer. The results showed that the higher the concentration of dimethylimidazole in the raw material would lead to the lower the loading ratio and embedding ratio of BSA in BSA@ZIF-8 by characterization of the composites obtained under different ratios of zinc, dimethylimidazole and water ratio. A higher temperature was conducive to the formation of ZIF-8 crystals, resulting in larger particle size of composites and lower embedding ratio and loading ratio of BSA. In addition, it was also found that the incubation time of composites should be controlled at around 24h. After 24 h, the crystal would no longer grow but the embedding ratio and loading ratio of BSA actually decreased. Finally, it was found that neutral environment (pH=7.4) was more conducive to the embedding of BSA, while acid and alkaline environment was beneficial to the growth of ZIF-8.
