Abstract  In order to further understand the morphology and doping mechanism of the cerium modified zinc oxide photocatalyst. ZnO photocatalytic materials with different amounts of cerium doping were prepared by co-precipitation method of adding zinc acetate and cerium nitrate to an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. The structural characteristics of zinc oxide were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that the increase of cerium amount led to the morphology change of zinc oxide from one-dimensional rod to two-dimensional nanometer. When the mass fraction of cerium reached 2%, zinc oxide became an evenly sized disk-shaped nanoparticles. The experiment found that the addition of cerium did affect the morphology and particle size of zinc oxide. In this paper, the mechanism of this process was discussed, and the photocatalytic degradation experiments of methyl orange showed that 2%Ce/ZnO nanoparticles had better photocatalytic activity and stability.
