Abstract Cu-based catalysts with high activity and low cost are the most important catalysts for methanol synthesis from CO and CO2. The preparation of Cu-based catalysts by the co-precipitation method is the most commonly used industrial preparation method and also the most actively researched field. This paper focused on the most critical Cu-Zn interaction in catalytic activity, reviewing and summarizing recent research progress in the structural formation and evolution of Cu-based methanol synthesis catalysts. It specifically discussed the interaction between mass transfer and reaction during the precipitation process, the influence of crystal structure during the aging process on elemental dispersion uniformity, the mechanism of interface formation during calcination, the role of key parameters in structural evolution during reduction, and the impact of third components on the catalyst system, so as to provide references for the development and design of Cu-based methanol synthesis catalysts.
