Study on the Preparation of CeO2 by Hydrothermal Method and Its Catalytic Degradation Performance for Toluene

Abstract CeO2 was synthesized via a hydrothermal method for the catalytic degradation of toluene. To obtain CeO2 with a large specific surface area, abundant active sites, and high catalytic activity, the preparation parameters were optimized using an orthogonal experimental design. The performance of the CeO2 catalysts in degrading toluene was investigated under conditions of a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 60 L/(g·h), oxygen content of 14.67%, and temperature range of 200-400 ℃, using a tail gas simulation-catalyst performance evaluation system. Furthermore, in-depth characterization of the CeO2 catalysts prepared with different precipitants was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), O2 temperature- programmed desorption (O2-TPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The orthogonal test results indicated that the type of precipitant, calcination method, and hydrothermal temperature all significantly influenced the structural properties of CeO2, with the precipitant type having the greatest impact. It was found that ammonium carbonate, as a precipitant, can effectively construct mesoporous structure and inhibit particle agglomeration through the gas generated during its decomposition and calcination. The activity evaluation results demonstrated that the as-prepared CeO2 (T-120-1) possessed a large specific surface area (106.78 m2/g), a small crystallite size, and abundant surface reactive oxygen species. These properties endowed it with excellent toluene adsorption, activation, and oxidation capabilities, achieving a toluene degradation rate of 77.34% at 200 ℃.
