Efficient Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation of Acrylonitrile Wastewater on MnO2/CeO2 Catalysts Modulated by CeO2 Morphology

Abstract Catalytic wet oxidation is an effective water treatment technology for reducing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of organic wastewater and improving its biodegradability (B/C). In this study, CeO2 catalyst supports with three morphologies (nanorods, octahedra, and cubes) were prepared. MnO2 was loaded onto the CeO2 supports via an impregnation method to fabricate heterogeneous wet oxidation catalysts, and the performance of the three catalysts in the treatment of industrial acrylonitrile wastewater was investigated. The results showed that nanorod-shaped CeO2 possessed a larger specific surface area and more surface defects, which endowed the nanorod-like MnO2/CeO2 catalyst with superior catalytic activity. Under the conditions of a reaction temperature of 200 ℃, initial air pressure of 2 MPa, and reaction time of 2 h, the COD removal rate of acrylonitrile wastewater treated by nanorod MnO2/CeO2 catalytic wet oxidation reached 89.9%, the total cyanide removal rate was 99.8%, and the B/C increased from 0.13 to 0.96. This study provided an effective strategy for the highly efficient treatment of industrial acrylonitrile wastewater.
