Abstract In this study, nonanoic acid and vanillylamine were used as raw materials, with tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) borate as catalyst, to synthesize N-nonylvanillamide using a self-made microwave continuous tubular reactor. The structure of the product was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The effects of reaction conditions such as microwave power, liquid flow rate, solvents, and initial reaction temperature on the conversion of nonanoic acid were investigated. The results showed that N-nonylvanillamide could be successfully prepared using the microwave continuous tubular reactor. Microwave power of 700 W, flow rate of 30 mL/min, ethylene glycol diethyl ether as solvent and initial reaction temperature of 120 °C were the optimal process conditions for this synthesis method. Under these conditions, the yield of N-nonylvanillamide was 73.04% with a purity of 98.34%. Compared to conventional synthesis method and ordinary microwave synthesis method, the microwave continuous tubular synthesis method had an intensification effect, could reduce back-mixing, shorten reaction time, and had good application prospects.
