Abstract:Butyl glycol t-butyl ether was synthesized through the etherification of C4 hydrocarbon monomer and coal glycol byproduct 1,2-butanediol. The influence of various conditions on this etherification reaction with strong acid resin as catalyst was investigated in this paper. The results showed that the proper conditions were as follows: reaction temperature 50-60 ℃, reaction pressure 0.9 MPa, liquid hourly space velocity 1.0 h-1, mole ratio of 1,2-butanediol to isobutene 4.0-6.0. Under the optimized conditions, 1,2-butanediol reacted selectively with isobutene in C4 hydrocarbon monomer. The conversion of isobutene and the selectivity of butyl glycol t-butyl ether were 89% and 90%, respectively. The catalyst performance remained stable during 1 000 h testing period.
