Abstract:The glycerol/ammonia method was a green route for the synthesis of 3-picoline, however, its yield is relatively low. On the basis of this reaction system, a series of organics (aldehyde or alcohol or ketone), containing odd carbon atoms, were added to the reaction system. The effect of the types of organics and the mass ratios of propanal to glycerol on the yield of 3-picoline were studied. The results showed that the addition of organics had a significant effect on the yield of 3-picoline. Compared with other organics, the propanal was in favor of increasing the yield of 3-picoline. The yield of 3-picoline reached 45.29 % and the total yield of pyridine bases reached up to 71.82 % while the mass ratio of propanal to glycerol was 1:4.
