Co-Fluidization Characteristics of Oil Shale and Cotton Stalk Particle

Abstract Co-fluidization experiments of oil shale and cotton stalk were carried out in a self-constructed fluidized bed cold experimental setup with particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. A mathematical model was established based on the computational particle fluid dynamics (CPFD) method, and the simulation results using WenYu-Ergun drag model were in good agreement with the experimental data. A novel quantification method for evaluating the mixing effect of binary particles was proposed based on the HSV color recognition model. The two particles were considered to have a good mixing effect when the mixing effect parameter was less than 0.5. The results showed that the square roots of the average particle size of the oil shale and cotton stalk exhibited an approximately linear relationship under good mixing conditions; the mixing effect parameter first decreased and then increased with the increase of the apparent gas velocity; the upper and lower limits of the apparent gas velocity of the fluidized bed applicable to the mixing of oil shale and cotton stalk particles and the average particle size of the two kinds of particles were all approximately linearly related. This study provides theoretical guidance for the development of fluidized bed reactor for co-pyrolysis of oil shale and cotton stalk particles.
