Abstract In order to improve the hydrolytic stability and antioxidant stability of sulfonated polyimide (SPI), two kinds of modified SPI with ether bond and sulfone group in the main chain were synthesized by random copolymerization, and proton exchange membranes (NTDA-DSDSA/BAPPS, NTDA-DSDSA/mBAPPS) were prepared by solution casting method. The thermal stability, mechanical properties, hydrolytic stability, antioxidant stability and proton conductivity were characterized and analyzed, and the effects of different molecular structures on the performance of proton exchange membranes were studied. The results showed that the two kinds of modified SPI proton exchange membranes had good thermal stability; the introduction of sulfone group could increase the free radical oxidation resistance of proton exchange membrane; NTDA-DSDSA/BAPPS with symmetrical linear structure had better hydrolysis stability and mechanical properties with tensile strength of 35.8 MPa, which was 1.5 times that of Nafion117 membrane. Its proton conductivity in 90 ℃ water reached 0.207 S/cm, showing good proton conductivity performance.
