Abstract With ethylene carbonate (EC) and Cl2 as raw materials, CuCl2 was used as a Lewis acid catalyst for photocatalytic synthesis of chloroethylene carbonate (CEC) in the absence of organic solvents and initiators. Through the investigation of different initiating conditions, the best initiating methods were ultraviolet light and Lewis acid catalyst. The experimental results showed that the optimal process conditions were as follows: the mass ratio of CuCl2 to EC was 1.0%, the molar ratio of EC to Cl2 was 0.81, the Cl2 inlet flux was 80 mL/min, the reaction time was 4 h, and the reaction temperature was 85 ℃. Under this process conditions, the conversion of EC was 79.4%, the selectivity of CEC was 97.1%, and the yield of CEC was 77.1%. The results showed that the generation of chlorine radicals in chlorination reactions is the key factor determining the reaction rate.
