The Progress in the Studies of Mass Transfer Behavior at Gas-Liquid Interfaces with Micro-/Nano-Scale

Abstract The mass transfer behavior at gas-liquid interfaces significantly affects the efficiency of chemical reaction and separation processes, thereby influencing the design, optimization, and operation of reactor and separator. With the development of nanoscience and technology, research into gas-liquid interfacial mass transfer behavior had delved into the nano-/micro-scale. Researchers had found that traditional macroscopic continuous models were inadequate for describing and explaining the mass transfer behavior at gas-liquid interfaces with nano-/micro- scale, making the development of new models applicable to these scales significantly important. This article reviewed recent progress on the mass transfer behavior at gas-liquid interfaces with nano-/micro- scale, specifically including: (1) nano and micro structure of gas-liquid interface and molecular enrichment phenomena; (2) interfacial instability phenomena caused by surface tension, surface tension gradients, and density differences; (3) existing theories of gas-liquid interfacial mass transfer and progress in this area at the nano and micro scales.
