Response Surface Analysis of Fourteen Olefin Sulfonation Process in Micro-Reactors

Abstract Sodium alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS) is a high-performance anionic surfactant with excellent biodegradability, wettability, and low irritation. A three factor three-level response surface experiment was designed by using 1-tetradecene as the raw material and liquid-phase SO3 as the sulfonating agent with a microchannel reactor, which investigated the interaction effects among the three factors including reaction temperature, raw material molar ratio, and single-sided inlet flow rate. The experimental results showed that under the interaction of reaction temperature and single-sided inlet flow rate, the effect of temperature on the content of active substances increased with the increase of flow rate at lower molar ratios (1.1-1.15), which indicated that the reaction was controlled by mass transfer. When molar ratios was higher(1.25-1.3), the reaction shifted from mass transfer control to reaction control. Under the interactive influence of raw material molar ratio and single-sided inlet flow rate, the curvature of the active substance content increased with the increase of temperature, and the effect of flow rate changes on it was enhanced. Under the interactive influence of the molar ratio of raw materials and temperature, as the flow rate changes from low (8-9 mL/min) to medium (9-11 mL/min), the curvature of the surface changed significantly, and the reaction was more clearly controlled by mass transfer. At higher flow rates (11-12 mL/min), there was no significant change in the surface, and the reaction process shifted to reaction control. It had certain guiding significance for optimizing process conditions by examining the interactive effects of process parameters for alpha olefin sulfonation at the microscale.
