Synthesis of Benzyl Acetate by Phase Transfer Catalysis under Microwave Irradiation

Abstract Benzyl acetate was synthesized from benzyl chloride and sodium acetate using tetrabutyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) as the phase transfer catalyst in water under microwave irradiation. The effects of several factors, such as molar ratio of benzyl chloride to sodium acetate, catalyst dosage, solvent volume, microwave power, irradiation time, reaction temperature and stirring speed, on the yield of benzy lacetate were investigated. The yield of benzyl acetate could reach up to 97 % or more under the appriprate experimental conditions of benzyl chloride 4.44 g, sodium acetate 5.17 g, TBAB 0.68 g, water 8 mL, microwave power 300 W, irradiation time 35 min, reaction temperature 100 ℃, stirring speed 400 r/min. The reaction rate under microwave irradiation was about 12 times faster than that under conventional heating. Stoichiometric sodium acetate and 2/3 TBAB dosage of initial feeding dosage were fed in aqueous phase for continuing reaction, after using 5 times, the yield of benzyl acetate could reach 92 %.
