Abstract The hierarchical pore NH2-MIL-53(Al) was successfully prepared by structural defect method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen/argon physical adsorption, scanning electron microscope analysis (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results showed that NH2-MIL-53(Al) had a hierarchical pore structure composed of micropores and mesopores. To investigate the hypothesis that the lack of a metal source throughout the crystallization process caused flaws and created mesopores, experiments were carried out in which the ratios of citric acid and solvent were changed. In the adsorption experiment of tetracycline hydrochloride in aqueous solution, it was found that the adsorption performance of hierarchical pore NH2-MIL-53(Al) on tetracycline hydrochloride was greatly improved, and the adsorption behavior accorded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Combined with the internal diffusion analysis and the effect of pH on the adsorption performance, it was inferred that the possible adsorption mechanism was that the external surface adsorption was dominated by electrostatic interaction and π-π stacking with internal diffusion simultaneously. The adsorption performance of hierarchical pore NH2-MIL-53(Al) was better than that of other traditional adsorbents, which showed great potential in treating polluted water caused by antibiotics.
