Kinetics and Modeling Studies on Semi-Batch Aqueous Solution Copolymerization of Acrylic Acid and Maleic Anhydride

Abstract A semi-batch aqueous solution copolymerization of acrylic acid and maleic anhydride using hydrogen peroxide as an initiator was carried out at 120 ℃. The effects of feeding rates of acrylic acid and hydrogen peroxide and dosage of hydrogen peroxide on monomer conversion and molecular weight were investigated. The formation of fumaric acid and malic acid respectively via isomerization and hydration of maleic acid was also studied. The results showed that increasing the feeding rate of acrylic acid and hydrogen peroxide and increasing dosage of hydrogen peroxide could increase copolymerization of maleic anhydride and reduced the formation of fumaric acid and malic acid. A mathematical model for the semi-batch aqueous solution copolymerization of acrylic acid and maleic anhydride was developed. The model predictions were in good agreement with the experimental results.
