Abstract In order to obtain polycyclohexyl ethylene (PCHE) with better weather resistance, thermal stability and optical properties, heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation technology was used to convert the side phenyl groups of polystyrene (PS) to the saturated cyclohexane groups. Using supported Pd-based catalyst, Box-Behnken Design in response surface method was applied to investigate the effects of reaction pressure, temperature, time and their interaction on the PS hydrogenation degree. Meanwhile, the regression equation between the response value and the influencing factors was established. By analyzing the variance of the response surface regression model, it was determined that the optimal conditions for the PS hydrogenation process were 3.5 MPa, 162 ℃ and 8.6 h. The reusability results of the catalyst showed that PS hydrogenation degree reached still as high as 90% after reuse for 12 times when the used catalyst was simply washed with solvent. The test results of tensile properties and dynamic thermomechanical properties showed that the tensile strength of PCHE increased by 40.1%, the elongation at break increased by 17.8%, compared with PS. The storage modulus, loss factor and glass transition temperature of PCHE were higher than those of PS, indicating that the purpose of hydrogenation modification of the material has been achieved.
