Research Progress on Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide to Higher Alcohols

Abstract The issue of global climate change caused by the continuous increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has become the focus of attention. With the deepening of research on renewable hydrogen energy, CO2 hydrogenation into high value-added chemicals has become one of the effective ways to alleviate such environmental problems. Among many CO2 hydrogenation products, because higher alcohols (C2+OH) can be widely used as fuel additives, reaction solvents, plasticizers and basic raw materials for a variety of fine chemicals, CO2 hydrogenation to synthesize C2+OH has attracted a lot of attention. However, the efficient activation of CO2 and the selective control of the CO2 conversion reaction involving the formation of C—C bonds have always been a huge challenge in the field of catalysis. Therefore, the development of a catalyst with high activity and high selectivity is still the key to the development of the process of CO2 hydrogenation to C2+OH. This review introduces the recent research progress of CO2 hydrogenation to make higher alcohol directly, including the potential application prospect of catalyst performance and its possible reaction paths. The reaction mechanism and structure-activity relationship of various catalysts are discussed, which is expected to be providing a new method for related research work.
