Synthesis of Copper Phthalocyanine from Phthalonitrile in a Deep Eutectic Solvent of Urea-Choline Chloride

Abstract The catalytic synthesis process of copper phthalocyanine in a deep eutectic solvent of urea-choline chloride was studied. Influence of reaction temperature, reaction time, raw material ratio and catalyst dosage on the reaction process and copper phthalocyanine yield were investigated, and the possible reaction mechanism was proposed. The molecular structures of the reaction products and intermediates were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-visible), thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimeter (TGA-DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The experimental results showed that deep eutectic solvent of urea-choline chloride played the role of solvent, reactant and catalyst simultaneously, and promoted the formation of phthalocyanine ring. In the process the use of toxic and harmful organic solvents was avoided, such as pentanol and trichlorobenzene, or high boiling point alkylbenzene, as well as the expensive 1,8-diazabicyclo [5,4,0] undecene-7 (DBU) organic base catalyst used in the traditional process. It provides valuable information for green synthesis and product refining of copper phthalocyanine products.
