Abstract Herein, NiAl2O4 spinel was used as a support to load Ni nanoparticles for dry reforming of methane, and the effects of different thermal treatments for preparing catalysts on carbon deposition during the reforming were studied. The results showed that Ni/NiAl2O4 catalysts with larger surface areas could be fabricated through either one-step thermal treatment under air atmosphere or two-step thermal treatment in Ar first and then in air atmosphere, with nickel-nitrate-impregnated MIL-53(Al) as the aluminum source and template. The metal-support interaction on the Ni/NiAl2O4 obtained from the two-step process was stronger than that on the Ni/NiAl2O4 obtained from the one-step process. This made the two catalysts exhibited different carbon deposition during the dry reforming of methane. After the dry reforming of methane for 50 h on Ni/NiAl2O4 obtained from the one-step process, a large number of carbon tubes formed, and the Ni nanoparticles were separated from the support by the carbon tubes due to the weaker Ni-support interaction. This indicates that there were still active Ni sites exposing on the Ni/NiAl2O4 obtained from the one-step process after 50 h reaction. Thus the catalyst activity remained at the initial level. However, after the dry reforming of methane for 50 h on Ni/NiAl2O4 obtained from the two-step process, the Ni nanoparticles still interact with the support due to the stronger Ni-support interaction, but were fully coated by onion-like carbon. Thus, there was no active Ni site exposing on the Ni/NiAl2O4 obtained from the two-step process, so that the activity was significantly reduced. These results are important for fabricating more efficient Ni-based catalysts with suitable metal-support interactions for the dry reforming of methane.
