Abstract Taking the co-processing process of 10% bio-oil and 90% vacuum gas oil (VGO) co-processing in a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) with 1.2×106 t/a capability as an example, the CO2 emission of the whole co-processing process and the emission of unit gasoline production in three scenarios, fast pyrolysis, catalytic pyrolysis and pure VGO, were analyzed and compared. For the co-processing process, attentions should not only be paid on the carbon emissions of product combustions, but also focus on the CO2 emissions of the production process. Results showed that total CO2 emission of the fast pyrolysis scenario was least with only 3.01×106 t/a. Compared with pure VGO scenario, CO2 emissions of unit gasoline production in fast pyrolysis scenario and catalytic pyrolysis scenario both decreased by 6.47% and 6.59% respectively. Therefore, the co-processing technology is an environmentally friendly technology that can reduce carbon emissions with a certain degree compared to the pure VGO scenario.
