Treatment of Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether by Using Fenton Oxidation

Abstract Fenton oxidation was applied for methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) degradation. H2O2 stabilizers were firstly screened and inorganic phosphate was proved to be the best stabilizer. Factors affecting TOC removal efficiency including initial pH value (pH0), molar ratio of ferrous sulfate to H2O2 (Fe2+:H2O2), molar ratio of ammonium phosphate to H2O2 (P:H2O2) and molar ratio of MTBE to H2O2 (MTBE:H2O2) were investigated. The results showed to H2O2 decomposition was 9.6% in 60 min with ammonium phosphate as stabilizer, which was 60% lower than that without ammonium phosphate. When pH0 value was 4.8, Fe2+:H2O2 was 1:10, P:H2O2 was 1:55, and MTBE:H2O2 was 1:40, TOC removal efficiency reached optimum value, which was 20% higher than that without ammonium phosphate. The addition of ammonium phosphate as stabilizer significantly improved the treatment effect of Fenton oxidation on MTBE degradation, which had an important reference significance for Fenton oxidation treatment of organic wastewater.
