Activity and Regeneration Performance of Ta2O5/SiO2 Catalyst for the Selective Conversion of Ethanol and Acetaldehyde to 1,3-Butadiene

Abstract The Ta2O5/SiO2 catalysts for the conversion of ethanol and acetaldehyde to 1,3-butadiene were prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method with different pore size of the supports and content of Ta2O5. The regeneration conditions and performance of regenerated catalysts were studied. The fresh catalyst and regenerated catalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption, transmission electron microscope(TEM), thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG). The catalytic performance of the 2%Ta2O5/SiO2-B catalyst with support of silica type B was optimal. The selectivity reached 80% at 45% conversion. After regeneration of spent catalyst at 550 ℃, Ta2O5 particles aggregated, led to faster deactivation. After regeneration at lower temperature of 500 ℃, the carbon deposits could not be completely removed, which reduced the initial conversion of the regenerated catalyst. However, the Ta2O5 particles did not aggregate, which were consistent with that of the fresh catalyst, and the stability of the regenerated catalyst was well after multiple regeneration.
