Abstract Hydrogen concentration is a key operating parameter of propane dehydrogenation process over Pt-based catalyst, which has an important influence on the yield and catalyst life. In this work, γ-Al2O3 was used as the carrier to prepare two kinds of Pt catalysts with different particle sizes. The structures of catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption, CO chemical adsorption and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). The effect of hydrogen on the catalytic performance of Pt-catalysts was investigated. And the coke accumulated on the catalysts after reaction were characterized by Raman, thermogravimetric and elemental analysis to explore the effect of hydrogen on the coke properties. The results showed that introducing hydrogen into the feed improved the catalytic activity, suppressed coke reactions and decreased the graphitizing extent of coke for both of the catalysts. But, the optimal molar ratios of H2 to C3H8 were required over the catalysts with different particle sizes for maximizing the propylene generation rate and minimizing the coking producing rate.
