Abstract The Ni3P/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared by impregnation and electroless plating method through phosphoric acid etching. The effects of preparation conditions, including molar ratios of P to Ni(P/Ni), varieties of complexing agent, molar ratios of sodium citrate/nickel (TSC/Ni), varieties of acid and time of acid etching, on the crystal phase of the catalyst were investigated. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption and NH3 temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD). The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) performance over the prepared catalysts before and after phosphoric acid etching was investigated using as the feed. The results showed that the pure phase Ni3P / γ - Al2O3 catalysts were obtained when P/Ni ratio was 6, adding sodium citrate as complexing agent according to TSC / Ni ratio of 1, and etching with phosphoric acid for 12 h. Compared with the Ni3P-Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst, the catalyst after phosphoric acid etching showed higher HDO activity at low temperature due to the enhanced acidity. the conversion of phenol increased from 65.5% to 99.0% and the cyclohexane selectivity increased doubled at 150 °C. The phenol was completely converted and the cyclohexane selectivity of 98.7% at 250 ℃.
