Study on Cerium Oxide Modified Pd/Fe3O4 Magnetical Sorbents for the Removal of Elemental Mercury

Abstract The sorbent prepared by the amino functionalized magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles loaded with noble metal Pd had efficient Hg0 removal performance, and it was easy to be separated and regenerated. However, the H2S gas in the coal flue gas had a strong poisoning effect on Pd, and the cerium oxide had the ability to remove H2S in a reducing gas environment. Therefore, a certain amount of cerium oxide was introduced to prepare the Pd-CeO2/Fe3O4 sorbent to improve its sulfur resistance and Hg0 removal performance in this work. The effects of different cerium oxide contents and gas atmospheres (N2-H2S-CO-H2) on the Hg0 removal performance, and the regenerations of the Pd-CeO2/Fe3O4 sorbents were studied at 200 ℃. Combined with a series of characterizations such as N2 physical adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the Hg0 removal mechanism of the sorbent was discussed. The results showed that when the mass ratio of CeO2 to Fe3O4 was 0.2, the sorbent prepared had the most efficient Hg0 removal activity at 200 ℃ under the N2 atmosphere, and could maintain stable Hg0 removal efficiency after multiple regenerations. Therefore, the introduction of CeO2 could alleviate the poisoning effect of H2S on Pd, and improve the Hg0 removal activity of the sorbent.
