Effect of Macroporous Alumina on the Performance of FCC Gasoline Hydrodesulfurization Catalyst

Abstract To improve the performance of catalytic cracking (FCC) gasoline selective hydrodesulfurization catalyst, the alumina support containing macroporous structure was prepared by carboxymethyl cellulose pore-enlarging method and then was used to prepare CoMoS catalyst. N2 adsorption-desorption, mercury intrusion method, and NH3 temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) were used to characterize the pore size distributions and acidity of the support before and after pore-enlarging treatment. The results indicated that the intrinsic pore size distributions and acidity were almost the same, but new macropore at about 150 nm appeared. The hydrodesulfurization reaction performance of the prepared catalyst was evaluated using industrial FCC gasoline. Compared with the untreated alumina support, the desulfurization selectivity of the catalyst supported on the alumina containing macroporous structure was greatly improved. The industrial application results on a 1.2 million tons/year gasoline hydrogenation unit in China indicated that the octane number loss was 0.6 under the condition of 90% desulfurization rate.
