Abstract Catalytic hydrogenation of coal tar in a high pressure autoclave at 350-410 ℃ and reaction time of 30-150 min was carried out to study the kinetics of asphaltene hydroconversion, and construct a four lumped total reaction kinetic model among asphaltene, oil, coke and gas. A series of kinetic parameters were fitted according to the experimental data. The results showed that under the condition of catalytic hydrogenation, the conversion rate of coal tar asphaltene was up to 62.1%, which was mainly converted into oil phase. Among the kinetics models of asphaltene hydrogenation conversion, the data fitted neatly first-order kinetics model for gas, oil phase and coke formation. The activation energy of asphaltene conversion was lower at 44.027 kJ /mol, indicating that the catalytic hydrogenation reaction conditions were favorable for the asphaltene hydrocracking reaction. The activation energies that asphaltene converted into oil, gas and coke in three parallel reactions were 76.250, 64.107 and 55.418 kJ/mol, respectively. This indicated that under the conditions of catalytic hydrogenation in this study, raising the reaction temperature was beneficial to the asphaltene transform into the oil phase.
