Stability of Gallic Acid in High Temperature Water with Hydrochloric Acid

Abstract The stability of gallic acid in high temperature water with hydrochloric acid was studied in a high-pressure batch reactor. The effects of initial concentration of gallic acid, concentration of hydrochloric acid and reaction temperature on the stability of gallic acid were investigated. The results indicated that HCl concentration was an important factor to the stability of gallic acid, in which the stability of gallic acid decreased as the concentration of HCl increased. Reaction temperature influenced the stability of gallic acid significantly. As the temperature increased, the conversion of gallic acid increased rapidly, whereas the stability of gallic acid decreased remarkably. Below 413.15 K, gallic acid was relatively stable in HCl solutions. The kinetic data of the study obtained at different hydrochloric acid concentrations and reaction temperatures were fitted with a pesudo-first-order kinetic equation. The apparent activation energy for the decarboxylation of gallic acid at different hydrochloric acid concentration was obtained by Arrhenius equation. All the obtained apparent activation energy values were close to 112 kJ/mol and not sensitive to the HCl concentration.
