The Compositions and Properties of Asphaltene from the Medium and Low Temperature Coal Tar During Hydrogenation Process

Abstract The medium and low temperature coal tar had been hydrotreated in a small scale fixed bed continuous hydrogenation process unit for 2 500 h. The changes of the compositions and properties of the asphaltene from coal tar after hydrotreating were studied. The results indicated that the activities of catalysts and the removal rate of the asphaltene decreased, the contents of S, N heteroatoms as well as Fe, Ca metal contents of the hydrotreated asphaltene increased with operation time increased. The hydrotreating perfromance asphaltene of coal tar was enhanced by raising temperature of temperature, but the asphaltene with higher molecular weight would be formed. In addition, as the reaction line was prolonged the degree of aromaticity of the hydrogenated asphaltene increased and the atomic ratio of H to C decreased, which indicated that its condensation degree increased. Moreover, the molecular weight of hydrogenated asphaltene increased as the operating time increased, even more than the original asphaltene, which demonstrated that partial asphaltene polycondesation reation occured. The polycondensation rate of the asphaltene increased at the last stage of hydrogenation, and Fe, Ca easily deposited on the surface of the catalyst, and the deactivating of the catalyst was serious.
