Controllable Modification of Mesoporous Carbon and Its Performancein Oxidative Dehydrogenation of 1-butene

Abstract The effects of phenolic species on the structure and catalytic activity of mesoporous carbon material (MC-X) were investigated by controlling the phenolic species in the synthetic raw material with organic-organic self-assembly. The structure, chemical thermal stability and the species and the amount of surface chemical groups of MC-X were investigated by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms at 77 K, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD), respectively. The catalytic performance of MC-X was investigated in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of 1-butene. The results showed that MC-X possessed different mesoporous structures in which the mesoporous carbon with monomeric precursors had ordered structures while the MC-3 exhibited a higher chemical thermal stability. The catalytic activities of MC-X in ODH reactions were closely related to the species and amount of their surface groups. Under the same carbonization conditions, the higher the C=O groups content (such as MC-3), the higher yield and selectivity of 1,3-butadiene. Further analysis showed that the ratio of C=O to CO groups was positively correlated with the selectivity of 1,3-butadiene and the total amount of C=O groups was positively correlated with the yield of 1,3-butadiene.
