Abstract In this review, the structure and composition of zein films were introduced briefly. Then, preparation methods, properties and applications of zein films were reviewed. And recent developments in modifications for zein films to satisfy performance requirements in application, such as strengthening the mechanical properties, enhancing the hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties, improving the oxygen/water vapor barrier, increasing the drug-loaded mass and efficiency, heightening the drug-loaded control and release, were introduced and discussed in detail respectively. In summary, the future orientations of zein films focus on new methods for preparation and modification, further investigation of the modification mechanism, new application fields and elimination of the initial burst release for the drug-loaded control and release.
