Abstract Firstly the mechanism of ring-opening metathesis polymerization(ROMP) and the development of Grubbs catalyst were introduced in this review. Then, the application of ROMP in synthesis of functional homopolymers and copolymers, and the application of these copolymers in the area of material, energy, biology and medical treatment were reviewed. Finally, the challenge of ROMP in future was pointed out.
