Abstract The organic modification of palygorskite was realized by hydrothermal method using various biomass carbon sources including xylose, fructose, sucrose and cellulose. The physical structure of product was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and elemental analysis. The adsorption ability of product was studied by conducting adsorption experiments with phenol and methylene blue as adsorbent, respectively. The results showed that xylose was carbonized to dissociative carbon microshperes, fructose and sucrose were carbonized to the mixture of carbon dissociative microspheres and carbon nanoparticles coated with palygorskite, and cellulose was carbonized to carbon nanoparticles coated with palygorskite. Among all of those biomass sources, the adsorption rate of phenol on palygorskite/carbon nanocomposite producing from cellulose was the highest, while the adsorption rate of methylene blue on palygorskite/carbon microspheres producing from xylose was the highest. In comparison of unmodified palygorskite, the adsorption rates of phenol and methylene blue were enhanced on hydrothermal treated palygorskite with all biomass sources except for sucrose.
