Performance of CuO/ZnO/CeO2-ZrO2 Catalyst for Methanol Steam Reforming

Abstract The aim of this work was to develop the system of distributed hydrogen production from methanol steam reforming (MSR). According to the idea of the asymmetric coupling, the CuO/ZnO/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst for methanol steam reforming and the Pt/Al2O3 catalyst for catalytic combustion were used in a sleeve of mini reactor for hydrogen production and the coupling of methanol steam reforming reaction and combustion reaction was realized. The performances of CuO/ZnO/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst were investigated in the sleeve of mini reactor. The results showed that the activity of CuO/ZnO/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst was about 30% higher than that of CuO/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst in this reactor. No significant impact on the performances of catalyst and reactor was observed after the reaction condition was changed and the program of the reactor was switched on and off for many times. The CuO/ZnO/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst had excellent reforming performances with no deactivation during 150 h stability test. When the reaction temperature was 230-260 ℃, the methanol gas hourly space velocity was 300-1 200 h-1，and the molar ratio of steam to methanol was 1.2, the highest hydrogen yield can be up to 162.8 L/h, and the hydrogen production process was supplied for proton exchange membrane fuel cell on hectowatt scale.
