Abstract A flow model was established for a multitubular fixed-bed reactor with the coolant flowing in parallel to the tubes. The effect of reactor diameter on pressure drop in distributing and collecting chambers, tube-to-plate clearance as well as radial size distribution of additional orifices on distributing plate was studied. The results showed that with the increase of the reactor diameter, both the pressure drops in the distributing and collecting chambers increased, and the tube-to-plate clearance got small. This smal tube-to-plate clearance would become the bottleneck for manufacturing and assembling the reactor unit. Increasing the height of distributing and collecting chambers, removing the tubes in the central region could reduce the pressure drop in the chambers and enlarged the tube-to-plate clearance.
