Theoretical Prediction and Experimental Measurement for Breakthrough Time of Removing H2S by Zinc Oxide

Abstract Desulfurization in a zinc oxide fixed bed is a widely used technique for the removal of H2S in application for fuel cells. A mathematical model with differential equations was developed in this paper based on the element balance and the shrinking core model to predict the breakthrough time of desulfurization under different temperatures and space velocities. In order to check the accuracy of calculation, the predicted breakthrough times were compared with the experimental data. The results showed that the breakthrough times predicted by the theoretical model were in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. It is also suggested that lower temperature and higher space velocity are beneficial to enhance the sulfur capacity of the desulfurizer. This theoretical calculation provides a reliable basis for the desulfurization reactor design and optimization.
