Progress in Chemical Recycling Technologies for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites

Abstract Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) exhibit the characteristics of light weight and high strength, and are widely used in aerospace, automotive, wind turbine blades and other fields. However, the rapid development and application of CFRPs have posed great challenges to the disposal of their waste materials. In particular, carbon fiber-reinforced thermoset polymer composites usually possess a cross-linked structure, making their waste products difficult to degrade naturally, while traditional treatment methods cause severe pollution. To realize the efficient reuse of CFRPs, chemical recycling technologies have become a key development direction. This paper systematically reviewed the research progress in chemical recycling technologies for CFRPs, focusing on the principles and advances of solvolysis, supercritical/subcritical fluid technology, electrochemical technology, and recycling technologies based on dynamic covalent bonds. The advantages and disadvantages of these technologies were compared and summarized, and the future development trends of CFRPs recycling technologies are further discussed. This review is expected to provide a reference for the closed-loop recycling and sustainable development of the CFRPs industry.
