Abstract Graphite, due to its excellent electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and mechanical strength, has wide applications in fields such as energy storage, composite materials, and sensing detection. However, the intrinsic surface of graphite is chemically inert, which limits further performance enhancement. In recent years, surface modification of graphite through functionalization has become a research hotspot for regulating its interfacial and application properties. This paper reviews recent progress in the functionalization of graphite. Firstly, it systematically summarizes various green and controllable surface modification methods, including plasma treatment, γ-ray irradiation, chemical grafting, and bio-mechanical exfoliation. It then elaborates on the application of functionalized graphite in polymer composites. Finally, it prospects the future development of functionalized graphite in the field of composite material applications.
