Abstract Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is a green chemical that can be synthesized by various methods, and its demand has been increasing year by year in recent years. Based on the energy consumption structure and the rise of new energy sources in China, this paper reviewed the progress of the synthesis of DMC by methanol oxidative carbonylation, urea alcoholysis and carbon dioxide direct synthesis from coal-based routes and the kinetics of multiphase catalytic reaction, focusing on the reaction mechanism and kinetic modeling process of the three technologies, discussed the reaction rate equations and their kinetic parameters, and compared the kinetic progress of each process. The kinetics of each process was summarized, the influence of reaction conditions on DMC synthesis was analyzed, and the future development trend of DMC synthesis by coal-based route was anticipated.
